Absorbed. Refracted. Attracted.

TON 618 explores the invisible through three behaviours of light and magnetism: black velvet absorbs light, optical glass gathers and reflects its surroundings, while magnetic titanomagnetite sand forms patterns along invisible lines of force. Named after one of the most massive known black holes, the work translates an immense, intangible scale into a physical landscape where the invisible becomes visible. When disturbed, the magnetic grains shift and recompose, revealing a system that is never fixed, only continuously transformed.

TON 618 is an artwork that absorbs light. 800mm x 800mm of black velvet holds the ground at close to zero reflectance — a surface that takes the light of the room and returns none of it. Set into that void, spheres of optical glass do the opposite: each one gathers the room, inverts it and reflects back. Between them, black titanomagnetite sand stands upright along lines of magnetic force. Nothing here is painted. Nothing here is fixed.

The namesake began as a mistake. In 1957, surveying faint blue stars at the Tonantzintla Observatory in Mexico, Braulio Iriarte and Enrique Chavira catalogued object 618 as a white dwarf — a dead star. Quasars were not recognised as a class until 1963. Only in 1970 was TON 618 understood to be the opposite of dead: a hyperluminous, radio-loud quasar driven by one of the most massive black holes ever measured. 40.7 billion solar masses on the C IV line; 66 billion on the Hβ. Its light has been travelling for 10.4 billion years, longer than the Earth has existed, and the galaxy that released it now sits some 18.2 billion light years off. Even the mass is disputed. The measurement is uncertain. The object is not.

This scale cannot be described. It can only be approached.

TON 618 sets that approach with three behaviours of the electromagnetic spectrum. The velvet absorbs. The glass refracts. The sand registers a field that radiates nothing at all. The dichotomy is intentional — the surface that gives back no light is the same surface on which the invisible becomes legible.

The sand is titanomagnetite, an iron-titanium oxide eroded off the andesite volcanoes of Taranaki, carried to the coast by rivers and dragged north by longshore drift across 480km of west coast. Twice as dense as quartz, sorted by wave and wind into the black beaches of the North Island. It is ferromagnetic. Here it is held by magnetic force alone, and the grains stand along the field lines in ellipses, spirals and radial bursts.

Disturb it and the drawing morphs, shifting to assume a different position along those invisible lines of force. Level the work and the grains rise again along those same lines. Nothing is destroyed, only recomposed. The invisible made visible.
