Blossom is a kinetic artwork symbolizing rebirth,
echoing the renewal of Wuhan’s historic MZLY building.
It fuses precision engineering with poetic form,
reflecting nature’s softened edge in shifting light and shadow.

Blossom is a mechanical kinetic artwork that represents rebirth. It is a fitting allegory to the rebirth of this historic building in the Hankou district of Wuhan.

Blossom is a complete artwork representing a detailed study in engineering and design, hand-crafted and precision-made components that make up a total work of art, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

This is the latest in a series of artworks by artist Ian Douglas-Jones who has been exploring the relationship that humankind has with nature over the last several years.  This latest work is the culmination of the thought processes that result in this work of art, both poetic and mechanical, hardened materials that represent a softened edge of nature.

This piece represents the symbiosis between man and nature reflection of modernity nestled within the historic confines of the upper reaches of the MZLY building.

The gallery cupola of the top of the building is the perfect environment and context in which blossom is suspended, its mirrored services on the upper and lower plains reflect the elegant surroundings constantly shifting and changing with carefully considered lighting to direct onto the panels which turns cast reflections onto the environment constantly gets slowly shifting balance of light and shadow.
